Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is staying at Tottenham Hotspur.
Matteo Moretto, a reporter for Spain’s Relevo, wrote on his personal social media account on Sunday (February 2), “Tottenham have rejected Atletico’s first offer for Hojbjerg. Atletico did not send a further offer. Hojbjerg will not be an Atletico player,” and “Tottenham and Atletico have not reached an agreement.” 바카라
Hojbjerg is a Danish midfielder who grew up in Bayern Munich and has played for a number of clubs, including Augsburg and Southampton. In 2020, he joined Tottenham from Southampton and has been a regular starter ever since.
He has scored 10 goals and provided 16 assists in 148 appearances for Tottenham, and while he’s not a subtle or technical player, his work rate, tireless stamina, and bold personality that doesn’t shy away from physical confrontations have helped him become a key player in the midfield. His strong character has led to him being touted as one of the favorites to become Spurs’ next captain.
However, this season has seen a significant drop in his profile. New manager Enzi Postecoglou, fresh off a treble with Scottish giants Celtic, prioritized the likes of Yves Bissouma, Oliver Skip, and Pape Sarr over him.
Hojbjerg also wanted a move away, with Spanish giants Atletico a priority amid interest from a number of clubs. “Hojbjerg is set for a fourth season at Tottenham but will look at a number of clubs before the transfer window closes,” said 90min in the U.K. “Tottenham and Atletico have been in talks about Hojbjerg,” the report said.
“Atletico are looking for a fighter midfielder. They have targeted Hojbjerg. However, Atletico want £30 million and Tottenham want £40 million. There is a gap in the transfer fee between the two clubs,” adding that the transfer fee needs to be adjusted.
Diego Simeone, Atletico’s president, added: “The club has people working on the transfer market. The club will decide, and we need a new midfielder,” he said, indirectly acknowledging the club’s pursuit of the player.
In the meantime, he was benched for the league opener against Brentford. Having been overlooked for a place in the squad during pre-season, he was not picked by Postecoglou in the opening game, further increasing the likelihood of a move.
While Tottenham continued to negotiate with Atletico, Fulham entered the fray. With Fulham key midfielder João Palinha very close to a move to Bayern Munich, the Cottagers started looking for a replacement. Hojbjerg was one of them, but he didn’t want to join Fulham and only had eyes for Atletico.
In fact, a personal agreement had been reached. “His priority is only Atletico,” Moreto said on social media on Tuesday. We have a personal agreement. But the agreement between the clubs has not been finalized.”
Unlike the player who wanted Atletico, Atletico were not serious about signing him. After Tottenham rejected Atletico’s first offer, Atletico did not send a second offer and withdrew from the negotiations. After being dumped by Atletico on the last day of the transfer window, Heuer ended up playing alongside Son Heung-min for at least half a season.
